There will be eight teams on the day, 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th 6th , Staff and Parents. We have a Perpetual trophy and 10 medals which has been kindly sponsored by Ger Murphy Sports Shop Castleisland and each member of the winning team will receive a €20 sports voucher which will be sponsored by our Parents Council. Well done to the winners of the first and second year girls school league and team captain Rachael O’ Dwyer. Pictured with the winning team are Mr. Damien Foley, League organiser and Mr. Maurice Fitzgerald.
Junior Girls Rugby
Well done to our Junior Girls Rugby Team on becoming Munster Champions. The girls beat Abbeyfeale in the final which is an impressive victory if you think of the tradition of rugby in that school and that our Junior Girls’ rugby team have only being playing for less than a year. This would not have been possible without the commitment of both the girls and the Management team. Well done to Ms. Bryan and her management team and to the Junior girls fore an incredible victory. Pictured is students gathered in the upper mall to receiver the winning team where captain Mary Beth O’Donoghue gave a wonderful speech.
Student Spaces
This year our Positive Behaviour strategy team and Students’ Council looked to set-up students spaces around the school to promote student well-being and positive behaviour across the whole school. The initiative was also in response to a student survey carried out where the need for student spaces was highlighted. The initiative included the help of both the Students and Parents Councils. After 6 potential areas/ spaces around the school were highlighted a student competition was ran for students to come up with their own designs for the areas with prizes for the best 3 designs. The students council promoted the competition and teachers got behind it by developing plans with their classes. Blank plans were put on stage for students to draw on and display boards there to inspire and guide them. In line with the schools green policy we promoted recycling of materials where possible. Students Council and PBL are now concentrating on outdoor spaces and picnic tables in conjunction with parents council. Below is a picture of winners (Taken in one of the new spaces) with their winning designs and being presented with their prizes by student council members. Pictured also is their art teacher Ms. Holly and School Counsellor MS. Curran.
Engineering Week
As part of Engineering week Engineering and DCG students visited Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney. The company has 890 employees and is a major player on a Global Scale. It was a timely visit as Liebherr has just announced their new Scholarship Graduate Programme. The students were given a wonderful tour of the premises by Declan O’Sullivan former pupil who works in the Liebherr sales division. The trip is part of a Joint initiative between Engineering and the Design Departments here in the school and was a great experience for students to see everyday applications of what they learn in school. Pictured with students is Mr. Declan O’Sullivan and their teacher Mr. Pat Cronin.

School Milk Programme
As part of our health promoting school Coláiste na Sceilge will be organising for Term 2 a school milk delivery starting on Monday 16th January. We would ask parents to encourage their son or daughter to take part and choose milk in place of fizzy drinks which are high in sugar and calories.
We would like to see our students choose milk as it is high in calcium and 90% of adult bone calcium is laid down by the late teens. We appeal to all those involved in sport to choose milk and particularly encourage girls as three out of four teenage girls are not getting enough calcium during this important bone development stage.
The school milk scheme which is subsidised by the Department of Agriculture offers pupils the opportunity to drink Lee Strand milk at school at a reduced price of 25cent per day.
DETAILS OF THE SCHOOL MILK SCHEME
PRODUCT: Pupils can enjoy the re-closable screw cap bottle filled with 250ml of Lee Strand Milk. The pupil friendly designed bottle can be easily opened and closed by students, therefore reducing any spillages in schools.
PRICE: The cost of the school milk is 25c per day that is only €1.25 per week.
Students pay for their milk in advance and pay for 97 days costing €24.25.
REFRIGERATION: The milk will be delivered twice weekly to the school and will be stored in The National Dairy Council refrigerator which is located in the school canteen.
PAYMENT: Payment can be arranged on line through Way 2 Pay on receipt of application form below.
If you would be interested in having your child sign up to the programme please click on image for application form and additional details. Please return form to Ms. Collison. Thank you.
Well Read
The literacy team are seeking your support for a reading challenge as part of the national “Wellread Programme”. Several activities to promote reading in the school for 2016/17 have already begun, including a weekly book club called “The Pageturners Club”, a staff book club, a “read wall” for reviews and recommendations. A “Wellread Week” is planned for March that includes a visiting writer for World Book Day.
The team are hoping to involve many readers in our wider community by setting up a “One Book, One Community” challenge from December. The chosen novel is called “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr which won the Pulitzer prize in 2015. It is set during WW2 with really compelling characters. It would be fantastic if you could find the time to read this award-winning book. You could then share your experience of the reading with the people in the community you meet. Please spread the word and share the pleasure of reading around our community.
Finally, when you have read the book the team would like to hear what you thought of it, so you are invited to post brief reviews to our school website anytime throughout 2017, or alternatively send them via your children. Your support of this initiative is greatly appreciated. Enjoy the book.

This term three students represented the school at ‘Poetry Aloud’, the all-Ireland poetry speaking competition. In October, second year student Rachel Houlihan and two TY students, Stephen O’ Sullivan and Tara Whittington, travelled to Killarney to partake of the initial stage of the competition. On the day, judges remarked on the enthusiasm and dedication of all participants, resulting in an extremely high level of competition. Tara succeeded in being chosen in her category to proceed to the semi-final at the National Library in Dublin on November 18th. Despite delivering a polished performance of Thatcher by Seamus Heaney and What Were They Like by Denise Levertov, Tara was unsuccessful in advancing to the final this year, but enjoyed the experience and hopefully will try again in 2017.

This success follows on from a Blitz that was held in Tallaght at the National basketball arena in late October where Síofra and Rachel Dwyer both represented Colaiste Na Sceilge in the Southwest Team. At this blitz both students were a credit to their school, club, parents and families and worthy winners of silver All Ireland medals. He met with classes and told us his story about losing his hand in an explosion when he was just 13 and how he was fitted with the most advanced bionic hand in the world, the Bebionic 3. He spoke about prosthetic limbs throughout history and students were also afforded the opportunity to see developments in robotics, with Arie encouraging those interested in engineering to carry on this work. He also told us the hidden story of how he was bullied in school after losing his arm and relayed the important message that no matter how difficult life becomes that there is always a way forward, not to be afraid to ask for help and to never lose your smile. He was an inspiration to all those who sat in on his talk. A big thank you to Arie and Ms. Casey Burns for organising his visit.

Fifth year students were given such an opportunity on May 10th when they visited Liebherr Container Crane manufacturing plant in Killarney. In a joint initiative between our Engineering and Design & Communication Graphics Department, students got a wonderful opportunity to tour the facility which included both the design and manufacturing elements.

Salters Chemistry Festival
On April 20th 2016, First Year Students Emmet O’Shea, Rachel Devane, Laura McCormick and Nessa Walsh took part in the Salters Chemistry Festival in UCC. The four students represented Coláiste Na Sceilge in UCC competing against a host of other secondary schools from all over Ireland. The Salters Festival is a chemistry based competition where students work in teams to solve a murder mystery. They gather and analyse evidence, and perform tests and experiments. They use all their findings and problem solving skills to logically seek out the murderer. Our four young, talented students represented CNS powerfully on the day and returned to South Kerry with Second Place overall. What a wonderful achievement for the students and what fantastic ambassadors of science they proved to be for Colaiste Na Sceilge and the Science Department. Congratulations to them and their teacher Ms.Katie Murphy.

Girls Rugby
Coláiste na Sceilge had their second outing this season with a blitz being held in Tralee rugby club. The girls took on established rugby schools from North Kerry and West Limerick and performed exceptionally well. Last time out they lost 3 and won 1 but this time around they put in an even better performance and ended up winning 2 of their 4 games. The opposition coaches all commented on the rapid improvement of the team. It is a testament to their dedication and hard work that our girls have been invited by Abbeyfeale Rugby Club to travel to West Limerick on the May weekend to combine with them and take on the Ulster champions who are touring Munster. To top off a great day all around 3 of our players , Lea Turner and Kate and Patricia O’ Sullivan have been invited to train with the Munster squad. This is a truly remarkable achievement as girls rugby in the school started before Christmas and this is only their second outing. To put it in perspective only 5 girls from the entire county of Cork are training with the Munster squad and we have 3 from Coláiste na Sceilge. Of course we must also thank their coaches Tony Cournane, Seamus Curran and Rob O’Mahony for their hard work and commitment, as well as all the parents and supporters who helped out along with their Manager Mr. Paul Clifford.

A Lenten Reflection
Lord you said to your followers “I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offering” Lord grant us the grace to get to know you as our friend over this Lenten season.
Help us to;
Give up complaining- To become grateful
Give up negativity- To be positive
Give up judgement- To think kind thoughts
Give up bitterness- So we will forgive everyone
Give up gossiping- And control the tongue
Give up discouragement – To be full of hope
Give up grudges- So we will forgive
Give up meanness- Instead return good for evil
Give up anger- to be more patient
Give up sin – and turn to virtue
Give up gloom – To enjoy the beauty of the world
Give up worry – To trust God
Lord God, teach us humility and help our love for you and one another to grow. May our faith grow stronger and our selfishness weaker. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Girls Basketball Teams in All-Ireland Playoffs
The senior girls basketball team reached the SW regional final having defeated Castletroy convincingly in the semi final. They played a very strong Mounthawk team in the final in a very exciting and close encounter, but it was the Tralee side that finished stronger and were victorious despite the galant efforts of the CNS girls. However, all is not lost, both teams qualify for the All Ireland play offs in January.
